Young hopefuls at Tournament opening.

One Hundred and five young participants, at the Guardian General Insurance (OECS) Ltd. Junior Tennis Tournament, set the tone for a memorable occasion, held from Dec 9th – 18th, 2017.

At the events opening ceremony Bernard Wilson, Marketing Manager for Guardian General Insurance (OECS) Ltd. And himself an avid tennis player stated; “Our Company is happy to be able to say that we have been title sponsors of this tournament since its inception 23 years ago. I urge all of you young persons present to participate fully in the event. Whether you win or lose, always be fair. That’s a life lesson you can learn from the sport. It you work hard and practice hard, in whatever you do, you will reap the rewards. Your good health and physical fitness, which comes from participation in sports such as tennis, will stand you in good stead for many of your future endeavours,” he concluded.

Mr. Richie Hughes, Grenada’s National Tennis Coach and the 2017 co-ordinator for the tournament, expressed his pleasure and pride at the turnout for the event. He stated “One of the most heartening facts about the statistics surrounding this years  tournament,  is that the majority of participants fall into the ten years and under category. This is a promise of good things to come, as it is an age group which really allows for the optimum results in development, not only as sports persons, but also as individual in charting young personalities and their principles for life.”

Mr. Hughes placed much energy in opening dialogue with teachers, schools and young tennis players, outside of the parish of St. George, in an effort to encourage even more potential talent to engage in developmental tennis, and the tournament itself. This resulted in over half of the players, 56 in total, joining the event from the ‘outer parishes’ such as St. David, St Andrew & St. Patrick. To enable their participation Guardian General Insurance (OECS) Ltd., also undertook the arrangement and funding for their transportation to the Tanteen tennis courts, throughout the week-long tournament.

The tournament was completed on Monday 18th December, 2017 with a prize-giving ceremony for the winners in each category and the exhortation to all participants to continue enjoying the game of tennis, and to make their own continued improvement the end goal.
